UPDATE: Loras College to level fire-damaged dorm

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Loras College announced Monday afternoon they will level the north building of the Visitation Complex, which was damaged by fire in March.

A lightning strike caused the fire, which heavily damaged the roof line of the 126-year-old building.

"It's an easy decision when you think about it from a financial and a business perspective. But when you think about the historic and emotional tie both to Loras, the Archdiocese and the Sisters of Visitation, then it's very troubling,' Loras College President Jim Collins said.

The south portion of the building will remain in operation.

“In the end, the money available through our policy is much less than what we believe will be the actual cost to rebuild the structure in the way it deserves,”  Collins said in a press release.

He says there is no definitive timeline for when they will raze the building.

"We'd like to do it as soon as possible, largely because aesthetically, you know, it's not the building it once was. The other is it allows people to move past some of the emotions that are symbolic for especially the students that experienced the fire personally," he said.

In lieu of rebuilding the North Building, Collins said the Board of Regents will review options to invest settlement funds into strategic priorities which contribute to the continued overall quality experience for students.

Collins also says they have no plans, at least immediately, to build something else where that building now stands.
