Community mourns loss of Parkersburg couple

A family and an eastern Iowa town is mourning the loss of an older couple Saturday. They were hit and killed Friday night on Highway 14 after checking their mail.

Dennis and Sharron Bartels were married for decades,

"It's pretty devastating," said Gary Schrage, Parkersburg, "I mean they were local people in the community and you lose two at once, it's pretty harsh."

According to Iowa State Patrol the Bartels' stopped to check the mail outside their Parkersburg home when their car was hit by a semi driver.

One neighbor says when she heard about the crash, she rushed to the scene. She said the couple's car was in the ditch and was barely mangled. Even though she did not know the couple very well, she said they were beloved in the community.

"I think it's a big loss for the community," said Gary.

Neighbors say the couple was helping, caring and never had a bad thing to say.

"They had bubbling personalities, everybody in the community knew them," said Gary.

They could be seen at sporting events at the high school and at Todd's Neighborhood Grill every morning at eight for coffee. Most of all, they could be seen together.

"Other than seeing them in the restaurant, you didn't see them a lot," said Gary. "You didn't see them around, I think they did their own thing at home and if they went somewhere they went together and obviously they came home together the other night."

According to authorities the Bartels', who are both in their seventies, died on scene outside their home.

"I thought that couple would be here forever," said Dee Schrage, Parkersburg. "I really did, because they are a big part of the community."

Gaylen Mulder also of Parkersburg was driving the semi that hit the couple. The 51-year-old survived the crash.
