Start of shotgun deer hunting season

Paul Frommelt of Dubuque along some others are out in the woods hunting for deer.

"With my sons, and nephews and friends. We got an annual get together for opening shotgun season," he said. 

Saturday the start of shotgun deer hunting in the Iowa, bringing out many to the Mines of Spain area in Dubuque. All of them claiming a spot hoping it's a good one.

Paul waits and waits. "So far, kinda slow...but we've seen some deer. We've seen more turkey than what we have deer," he said.

The men using a certain technique in hopes of attracting more. "We've got certain guys that drive and then blockers, usually I'm a blocker so I come down in here in a place like this and then the drivers will come from wherever and drive the dear towards the blockers."

But for them, it's really just about enjoying the outdoors. "I been deer hunting for probably about 10 years, but I just enjoy getting outdoors and the camaraderie of getting together with the guys and going out to hunt," said Paul.

Some of what they kill will be donated which will go to food pantries and be given to people in need.

The first season of shotgun deer hunting runs through Wednesday. The second begins next Saturday.
