Iowa City man faces alleged robbery charge at Subway

An Iowa City man faces a robbery charge after police say he robbed a Subway clerk at gunpoint.

Iowa City police charged Charles D. Harris, 26, with first-degree robbery, a class-C felony, according to an Iowa City police complaint.

At around 7:20 p.m. Thursday, Harris entered the Subway restaurant located at 1901 Broadway St., asked a clerk for a piece of paper and wrote, "This is a robbery, gimme all your money or get shot." Harris then handed the paper to the clerk and lifted his shirt to reveal a handgun in his waistband. He pointed the gun at the clerk, who removed $49.40 and gave it to Harris, according to the complaint.

The complaint says Harris fled the restaurant, and police found a trail of change heading east across Broadway St.

Police say they lifted palm and finger prints from the counter where the suspect rested his hands  and confirmed through surveillance video that he was not wearing gloves. Police sent the prints to the Cedar Rapids Police Department Crime Lab and matched a middle finger print and palm prints to Harris.

The complaint says Harris lives within two blocks of the Subway and was arrested on a warrant Friday.
