Burglar breaks into church, leaves evidence

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Waterloo Police are looking for the person who broke into Walnut Ridge Baptist Church late Wednesday night and stole an associate pastor's laptop.

According to church financial administrator Bryan Segerstrom, the burglar broke out a basement window either Wednesday night or Thursday morning, crawled into the building, walked through the school's basement, went to an associate pastor's office, broke open the door, and stole the computer.

Segerstrom estimates more than $2,000 in damages.

Segerstrom says he submitted the damage and stolen property to insurance.

Waterloo Police Captain Dave Mohlis says authorities were able to find a cellphone and knife in the same room where the burglar broke out the window.

Captain Mohllis says he's not sure whether the person or persons responsible for the crime owned the phone and knife, but they're investigating who owns those items.

According to Segerstrom, the church's security alarm went off during the time of the breakin, but it eventually turned off overnight.

Segerstrom says he's been a part of the congregation for more than 40 years, and he's seen vandalism at the school but never a crime quite like this.

As police track down the person or people responsible for the crime, Segerstrom says he simply wants the burglar to return the laptop.

More details are still to come.
