"1,000 cats," new program helps humane society deal with large number of cats

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

One eastern Iowa humane society is asking  for help taking care of a growing population this holiday season.

The Cedar  Bend Humane Society says normally around this time of year, they start to take in less cats.

But that's not the case right now. They say  in the past 4 months they've gotten more than 1,000 cats.

They don't turn any of them away.

Their adoption center only has room for around 50 to 60 cats.

So they've had to find ways to make more room, such as turning some extra rooms into "cat rooms," and even putting some cages in hallways.

The humane society is starting a new program this year, hoping to get more people to foster some of the cats.

They're calling it home for the holidays, asking people to foster a cat or any animal for a few weeks during the holidays.

It's a great way to see what it's like to have a pet, or make sure you get along with the one you picked out before you adopt it.

The  program starts December 20th.

The humane society says if you don't want to adopt or foster, they're also looking for donations. Click here if you'd like to donate.
