UPDATE: Waterloo police cruiser hit in Highway 20 crash

UPDATE: The Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office says a driver now faces drunk driving charges after crashing into a Waterloo Police Officer's squad car.

They say Erick Anderson, 27 from Missouri, was taken to the Black Hawk County Jail after the crash; Anderson is charged with OWI 2nd offense, no insurance, failure to maintain control, and driving on the wrong side of the road.

Investigators say he hit a squad car driven by Waterloo Officer Mark Nissen. Nissen told investigators he saw the car coming and tried to avoid getting hit, but he was hit head-on. His lights and sirens were on at the time.

Officer Nissen was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Anderson and his passenger were examined for injuries at the scene by Waterloo Fire Paramedics. 

PREVIOUS STORY: The Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office says a Waterloo police cruiser was hit by another car shortly after 4:30 a.m. this morning.

Our crew on the scene saw a tow truck taking what appeared to be a marked Waterloo police squad car away from Highway 20. An ambulance was also called to the scene.

The Waterloo Fire Chief is calling the crash minor and said no one got hurt.

One lane was blocked, but has since been reopened.


The left Highway 20 westbound is currently blocked near Ansborough Avenue in Waterloo.

According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, there is a crash.
