Holiday Hoopla kicking off in Cedar Falls

Posted: Updated:
CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

Santa Claus is coming to town.

Cedar Falls' annual Holiday Hoopla kicks off at 6:00 p.m. Friday, and dozens of people are in downtown Cedar Falls waiting for Santa to arrive.

There might not be much snow on the ground, but people are definitely in the Christmas spirit.

The mood changed dramatically throughout the day.

Earlier in the afternoon, a few of Santa's helpers prepared for his big appearance.

Even though his workshop sat vacant Friday afternoon, business owners were confident they could attract patrons Friday night and Small Business Saturday.

"We're part of the community, we give back to the community. We participate in the Festival of Trees and things like that," Bud Field of Cedar Falls said.

Field said it feels like the holiday season snuck up on everyone, with warmer weather than usual, but he's glad to see everyone embracing the Christmas spirit.

"It's fun. You'll see people you haven't seen for a long time (including) friends, neighbors, and your kids will see other kids they know. It's a really unique event," Field said.

Even though sidewalks were mostly bare earlier Friday, workers and store owners were busy wrapping up finishing touches to ensure a successful Holiday Hoopla.

They tell me, it's their favorite time of year.

"It's the thing to do. It kicks off the Christmas season. Tonight there will just be a sea of kids and families here, and one thing it does do, kids will remember that when they get older, and they'll start shopping downtown. Because their parents took them downtown," Field said.

Small Business Saturday kicks off Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and it runs until 5:00 p.m.

Jingle Mingle will also start Dec. 1 in Cedar Falls.
