Reflections in the Park turns lights on for 22nd year in Dubuque

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

It's not quite Thanksgiving yet, and there's no snow on the ground, but it's starting to feel a lot like Christmas in the tri-states.

Hillcrest Family Services debuted their Reflections in the Park Wednesday, marking the 22nd year the fundraiser has taken over Murphy Park with a dazzling display of holiday lights.

Darlene Bolsinger says more than 45,000 people have passed through the park each year for the past few years, helping raise about $125,000 for a number of important services.

For many in the tri-states, Reflections has become a sacred holiday tradition.

"There's so many stories we get from families, that they'll tell you exactly when they come through, and how they do it, before or after their meal, or what they do, go out to eat. It's just a tradition at this point. It's part of Christmas in the tri-states," she said.

For just the second year out of the 22, Hillcrest opened the display one day early to allow people to walk, rather than drive, though the park.

Katie Hoftender and her family usually drive through on New Year's Day, but couldn't pass up the unique opportunity to go through on foot.

"It's just one of those things that she enjoys doing, and just growing up and stuff, we had lots of family traditions, so we just kinda want to keep it going with our family," she said.

The display opens back up to vehicles Thanksgiving night and runs through Jan. 1.

Tickets are $10 at the gate, or $8 in advance.  Those can be bought at any Hillcrest of Dubuque Bank & Trust locations.
