Wahlert choir returns from performing for Pope Francis

A weary, but energized group of 60 students from Wahlert Catholic High School returned to Dubuque late Monday after traveling to Italy to perform for Pope Francis.

"I was really afraid I was going to mess up," said Senior Lela Udri.

A total of 95 people took the trip, getting the chance to take part in a huge mass, perform in multiple churches and see Italy.

"I don't know, the thought that he would have heard our choir is just ridiculous. I'm still kinda freaking out about it," Udri said.

Sophomore Jacob Nuti still can't believe he came so close to the Pope.

"He was 15-20 feet away from me at one point, in his Pope mobile, and he was just so smiley and happy and willing to be there for us. And it was quite amazing that when I went to see the rest of the group, I just cried, because it was the experience of a lifetime," he said.

Aaron Behnke, the school's vocal music director, says it was incredible to watch the students soak up this experience.

"To see them so passionately excited to be able to see the Pope and to sing in these amazing churches we were able to sing at was really incredible," Behnke said.

It's certainly one they'll never forget.

"I feel lighter. It's weird when I saw him, all of my griefs and sadnessess and all the things I had in my mind just went away, cause I realized that we are all in this together, and there were so many people there to see one man, and it was amazing," Nuti said.
