Posted: Updated:

A high-speed chase in eastern Iowa ends with a crash in Johnson County. The driver is behind bars and a passenger was taken to the hospital.

It all started yesterday around 10 a.m. The Iowa State Patrol tried to stop a car for speeding. Troopers say the driver would not stop and drove erratically into Solon.

The state patrol says it decided to stop the chase at that point, but then went after the car again once it learned the driver was a registered sex offender and there was a young female in the car with him. Authorities tried to use stop sticks, but the driver went around them and through the ditch.

Eventually, the suspect lost control on a gravel road, the car went into the ditch and hit a pole.

The driver, Jeff Rangel, Jr., (20 years old), from Des Moines was taken into custody. A passenger was taken to the hospital. There's no word on her condition this morning.

A child is injured after a high-speed chase in Johnson County.  Troopers tried stopping a car driven by 20-year-old Jeffrey Rangel, Jr. on I-80.

Rangel then went on to Highway 1 north into Solon, where troopers pulled off the chase because he was driving at high speeds through town.  Troopers then intercepted the car, and Rangel lost control, crashing in the 5700 block of 160th St.

The name and age of the child injured in the crash is not being made public at this time.
