NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson added to her record-breaking career by becoming the oldest woman in space.

She arrived at the International Space station over the weekend, joined by a French and a Russian astronaut.

They're joining an American and two Russians at the orbiting lab.

Whitson is 56 years old and will turn 57 in February. Until now, the oldest spacewoman was 55.

This six-month mission should push her beyond 534 days in space, the US record set in September by 58-year-old astronaut Jeffrey Williams.

Whitson grew up in Beaconsfield, Iowa.
