Davenport coming up with plans to allow backyard chickens

Posted: Updated:
DAVENPORT (AP) -

Davenport residents aren't allowed to keep backyard chickens, but that could change in the coming months as officials craft a new ordinance.
The Quad-City Times reports Community Planning and Economic Development Director Bruce Berger presented the City Council with a draft ordinance Tuesday that was modeled off laws in Rock Island, Illinois, and Cedar Rapids.
Chicken owners would have to pay a fee and submit a document certifying they have the training to care for chickens.
Officials expect to formally present a draft ordinance to the council in January.
Alderman Ray Ambrose expressed concern the ordinance would lead to more nuisance complaints, but Aldermen Kyle Gripp says other Iowa cities that allow chickens typically receive less than 10 complaint calls a year.
