"Suck it up, Buttercup:" Iowa lawmaker proposes new bill after election protests

Posted: Updated:

Iowa Representative Bobby Kaufmann calls the post-presidential election hysteria unhelpful and ridiculous, and in response, plans to introduce new legislation this upcoming session.

KWWL spoke with him Tuesday morning.

Rep. Kaufmann sends the message that enough is enough, specifically citing the protests along I-80 last week in Iowa City, which blocked traffic for some time. People were protesting against president-elect Donald Trump.

The hysteria and protests gave Rep. Kaufmann the idea to introduce a new bill, nicknamed "Suck it Up, Buttercup." He says after seeing the recent protests, he'd like to clarify the code when it comes to protesters on an interstate. One question he brought up is, can protesters be charged? That could potentially be part of a code clarification.

Kaufmann also says he's hearing about new expenditures in schools following the election, possibly for counseling or other services. He says if those new expenses were to be found and confirmed, he'd like to cut them; which would be a part of the bill introduced.
