People in Dubuque come out to learn about the plans for a new community center in the north-end neighborhood.
Steeple Square is the former St. Mary's Parish.
After more than 100-years, it closed its doors in 2010.
Developers wanted to buy and demolish the church, however it was saved by people who felt it was important to preserve its history.
Board members say it's about revitalizing a part of Dubuque that's been overlooked. "Now this area here is gonna be converted into a vibrant community center, that will be for the community to use for various activities," said Sister Helen Huewe.
Some of those activities include, weddings, parties and other events.
The campus will also include a childcare center. Its former school is currently being converted into an apartment building.
The hope is it'll be complete some time next year.
Leslie Hospitality owner Edwin Leslie says he doesn't have anything to hide, and to prove it he invited the public to view all of the documents, emails, agreements, and financial statements related to the deal at a public meeting this morning.
