The Cedar Valley Brew Boom

(KWWL) -

The Cedar Valley's brew broom, the industry of micro breweries, quickly expanding in the area.

Not only is SingleSpeed investing in a new larger 2nd location in Downtown Waterloo, the Cedar Valley is home to two new brewing companies.

At the corner of Second and State Street in Cedar Falls just a stone throw away from SingleSpeed's original location, Nick Newgard  is hard at work making his hobby into a business.

"We make different beers that Dave at SingleSpeed does. I think actually more than competing, I think we will actually be helping each other bringing craft beer fans down here and give them more options," said Second State Brewing Company Owner Nick Newgard.

The new business expanding options for the nation-wide micro-brew craze that has found roots in the Cedar Valley.

"People are getting that taste for craft beer and finding that we can make as good of beer here in Iowa as they do on the west coast," said Newgard.

Across town, Lark Brewing is celebrating their first month of business.

"We experiment a lot with barrel aging, with infusing different beers live from tap wall, and most importantly we have a small batch series program where we bring in local home brewers and give them a chance to brew beer that will make it to our tap wall. If it sells well, we will scale it up to our large system and get them trained. Hopefully breeding that next generation of breweries here in the Cedar Valley," said Lark Brewing Co-Owner Sean Christensen.

Christensen says the first month of business has brought a lot of return visits and beers poured.

SingleSpeed's Waterloo location and Second State Brewing plan to open in 2017.
