Waterloo firefighters are battling an apartment fire in the 900 block of Commercial Street.

Waterloo police say it's an abandoned building but sometimes they find people inside.

Firefighters rescued a man from a second story window. He told firefighters there might be other people inside but crews did not find anyone.

Police confirm the building is owned by the City of Waterloo. On the city's website, it's listed as a "a lot for sale by the city."

According to property tax information from the Black Hawk County Assessor's website, the building was built in 1906.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
