Home destroyed the day sale was finalized

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

A family's home burns down the day the sale of that home was finalized.

Bryan Butcher and his wife lived in the Cedar Falls home for 17 years with their two daughters.

On Tuesday, everything was taken from them in a devastating fire.

Flames and smoke greeted the couple as they drove down their driveway.

"Well, the ironic thing was we just closed on the sale of the house," said Bryan Butcher, homeowner. "We just got back from the closing and we pulled up in the drive way and noticed that the front of the house was on fire."

Though the Butcher's sold their home, all of their belongings were still inside.

"Everything that was associated with the kids and family was in the house," said Bryan. "Actually everything that I owned was either in the garage or in the house and it was all completely destroyed."

The fire started in a craft room used by Brian's wife. The family is still in disbelief that everything is gone.

The homeowner says it took about 20 minutes for the fire to destroy his family's home, he says all he could do is stand there and watch it.

"There's just been a lot of good things that happened out here and just to see the house where I've spent the last 17 years, it just rips you...it rips you apart," said Bryan.

The couple is now starting over.

"It's very humbling to actually be 53-years-old and say I literally have what I am wearing right now," said Bryan. "I have nothing else, like I said it can be replaced."

The State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire. The couple still plans on moving into their new home, but with no belongings. The Butcher's daughters have created a Gofundme page to help their parents with the loss. https://www.gofundme.com/butcher-fundraiser?r=36506.

Bryan says he is not sure how this fire will impact the new homeowners. He says insurance companies and realtors are looking into it.
