Cedar Falls is heading to the championship round in the 5A State Volleyball Tournament after defeating Ankeny in three sets.
The Tigers came out of the gates firing with an 8-0 run to begin the first set. They remained dominate the entire set winning by double digits, 25-11.
"We were pretty confident with that first because Dowling was a team that we'd seen twice. We knew they were playing a lot better recently. We didn't really know what to expect today with Ankeny," Head Coach Matthew Johnson said.
Into the second set, Cedar Falls didn't let up with another dominate win, 25-16. Grace Burken led the Tigers with 11 kills.
They sealed the deal in the third set but Ankeny finding their rhythm made it difficult for them. In a much more contested game, the Tigers took it 25-18.
A highlight of the match up was the Tigers serving abilities with 11 tallied aces; five from the hands of Majda Suljic.
Johnson said they did expect to play an aggressive and emotional game.
"We really focused on making sure that our level was consistent regardless of what was going on," he said. "Sometimes that can work both ways when you play with a lot of energy like that."
Cedar Falls moves on to 40-3. They'll take on the back-to-back champions Ankeny Centennial in the championship on Friday at 10 a.m..
