MUST SEE VIDEO: Surveillance video shows moment Dubuque sinkhole opens up

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

We're getting a look at the moment a massive sinkhole opened up in Dubuque over the weekend.

It happened on 11th Street between Iowa and Main Streets just before 6:00 a.m. Sunday morning.

In the video, you can see a car pass over the spot where the sinkhole would eventually open up.  That car gets quite a jolt, but the road holds up enough so the car can pass unscathed.

But just minutes later, part of the road gives way, and the sinkhole opens up as three distinct chunks of road fall away.

It all stemmed from a water main break.

"As the break occurred, it was eroding away the material that was supporting the street, which then resulted in the collapse of the street," said Bob Green, manager of the Dubuque Water Department.

Green says in his 25 years of service with the city, he's only seen one other incident like it.

Crews were able to repair the water main break and restore service by Sunday evening.

He says the road should open back up Thursday.
