Absentee voting down in Black Hawk County

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) -

The number of people casting their ballots absentee is down around the nation.

According to Black Hawk County Auditor Grant Veeder, the elections office caught up a lot, but they are still behind 2012 numbers.

At five days before election day, the county has 26,835 absentee ballot requests.

Five days before the 2012 election, 29,666 ballot requests were sent.

At last check, the county has 22,531 absentee ballots returned, but in 2012 the county reported 24,227 ballots returned to the county office five days before the election.

Initially, county auditors were reporting a dramatic decline in the number of people casting their ballots absentee after early voting started, but it seems elections office are catching up.

Election experts say 2016 presidential campaign teams didn't push early voting as much as previous campaigns.

Political experts say it could be because more voters are dissatisfied with the presidential candidates.

Regardless, election officials say more registered Democrats vote early than Republicans.
