Chicago Cubs win World Series over Cleveland Indians

Posted: Updated:

It took the Chicago Cubs 108 years, seven games, a brief weather delay and extra innings to capture their first World Series title since 1908. But it was well worth the wait, Cubs beat the Cleveland Indians 8 -7 in 10 innings to win the World Series, four games to three.

Former Kansas City Royal Ben Zobrist hit an RBI double in the top of the tenth to give Chicago a 7-6 lead. Miguel Montero also drove in a run to give the Cubs an 8-6 lead. Both of the runs came off Indians reliever Bryan Shaw.

Cubs reliever Carl Edwards came in to close out the win for Chicago. After retiring the first two batters he gave up a walk and an RBI double to Rajai Davis to make it 8-7. Pitcher Mike Montgomery came in to get the final out.

The Cubs used three solo homeruns by Derrick Fowler, Javier Baez and 39 year-old David Ross playing in his last game to take a 6-3 lead into the eighth.  Cleveland rallied with three runs in the bottom of the eighth including a 2-run homer by Rajai Davis off Cubs closer Aroldis Chapman to tie the game at six.

Neither team scored in the ninth and there was a brief weather delay before the tenth.
