CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Two people including a police officer are in the hospital after an officer-involved shooting.

The incident happened overnight near Coe College in Cedar Rapids.

Police say it all started with a traffic stop, when the man they stopped began an altercation with the officer eventually leading the officer to shoot.

At this point, we do not know the details of what exactly happened during the altercation, or whether the man was armed.

After the man was shot, he drove away crashing into an unmarked police SUV.

The officer inside the unmarked SUV had to be pulled from the vehicle but is expected to be okay.

After hitting the SUV the man continued driving, crashing into a parked car in a Coe College parking lot and sandwiching multiple vehicles together.

"It was kind of scary for some of us because like you don't think it's going to happen. You don't think well, it's Coe it's not going to happen to us," says Kathryn Fleming, a Coe College Student.

Students say they were informed of the situation early on through email.

The man was taken into custody from the Coe College parking lot where he ended up after the second crash.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the incident.

At this time the names of those involved have not been released.
