(KWWL) -

A tight race is unfolding in eastern Iowa, the seat for Iowa's First Congressional District. On the ticket, Democrat Monica Vernon is hoping to unseat Republican incumbent Rod Blum.

A week out from the election, Vernon says she is focusing on talking to voters. She says her plan, if elected, is to fight for working families.

"Equal pay for equal work isn't just a woman's issue, it's the family," said Vernon. "You know when families succeed, communities succeed."

She says her experience comes from building her own business and bringing people together, specifically during the 2008 floods. As for her opponent, she says there is a clear difference between them.

"You know I see what he did in terms of going, shutting down the government," said Vernon. "That doesn't do anything. What we need is people who will go and find solutions to problems and I will be willing to really work with everybody."

Just recently, Vernon had the chance to be on stage with Hillary Clinton during her Cedar Rapids visit. Vernon says despite the latest email situation with Clinton, she is still backing her for president.

"Well to me that's a matter for the FBI and I think everybody I talk to wants to get back to the issues," says Vernon. "Talking about that any longer isn't going to get us one more job. To me, I'm focused on jobs for people right here."
