Fayette County man awaiting trial on 2012 murder charge found dead in jail

WEST UNION (KWWL) -

Authorities in Fayette County have scheduled an autopsy as they try to determine how a man awaiting a murder trial died in jail Monday night.

39-year-old Matthew Thomas Braun, of Rural Fayette, was found unresponsive in the inmate shower and changing room area of the Fayette County Jail at around 9:46 p.m. last night. Revival efforts were unsuccessful, and Braun was pronounced dead by the county's medical examiner.

Fayette County Sheriff Marty Fisher says his department is still trying pin down the inmate's cause of death.

“The death does not appear to be suspicious in nature and there is no indication of foul play; however, a determination into the cause of his death is still under investigation,” Fisher said through a news release.

Braun was in custody awaiting trial on a first-degree murder charge -- he's accused of beating a fellow resident at Prairie View Residential Care Facility to death in September 2012.

The Fayette County Medical Examiner’s Office is assisting with the investigation into Braun's death, while the State Of Iowa Medical Examiner’s Office and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation have also been contacted.
