Officer-involved shooting before crash in Cedar Rapids

UPDATE: An investigation is underway following an officer-involved shooting and crash in Cedar Rapids.

Cedar Rapids police say an officer pulled a driver over. The suspect got into some sort of disagreement with the officer and the officer fired his gun. 

Police say the suspect then drove off and crashed into an unmarked police SUV near Coe College. The suspect allegedly also hit parked cars in a Coe College parking lot where officers were able to take him into custody.

Police say the suspect has serious injuries. He's currently at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. His name has not been released but we know he's 37 years old.

The police officer who got in a disagreement with the suspect was not seriously injured. An officer who was in the SUV had to be extricated and is in the hospital but is expected to survive.

The name of the suspect is being withheld pending notification of family members. 

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the case.

It's important to note -- Coe Road near Center Point Road will be closed off for much of the day as the investigation continues.St. Luke’s Hospital employees will be able to access the employee parking lot with proper employee credentials.

An area by Coe College is currently blocked off by police tape. Police have been in the area for hours now. Police tell us it all started as a traffic stop but have released few other details at this point.

We know an unmarked police car was involved in a crash. We're still waiting to learn the officer's condition.
