Longtime Cubs fan remembers 1945 World Series

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Inside room 218 at the Bethany Home in Dubuque, lives one of the biggest Cubs fans in all the Tri-State area.

"What do I love about the Cubs? I was born and raised a cub fan," said 92-year old Loras Collins of Zwingle, Iowa.

After so many years of disappointment, Collins is thrilled his favorite team is finally in the World Series. "I predicted four years ago that 2016 would be the year...everybody thought I was nuts," he said.

Collins has a long history of being a die-hard Cubs fan. He actually attended the World Series in 1945, when the Cubs made their last appearance.

He was in his early 20's back then. "This is a souvenir bat I brought back from...the 45 World Series. Stan Hack was my favorite player back in those days, he played third base," Collins said.

But like so many other devoted fans, he hoped the team would've made it this far, much sooner. Collins not only a devoted Cubs fan, in his earlier years he played semi-pro baseball.

Even after Friday night's loss he's remaining optimistic, just like he has over the last 71-years. "I'm thinking we better win tonight...it's pretty hard to win three in a row but it's possible," he said.
