Boos and Booze: Dubuque bars gear up for busy weekend

Posted: Updated:

When pirates and superheroes invade downtown Dubuque bars this weekend, they won't be the only ones out in force.

Throngs of loyal Cubs fans will also be vying for a seat and a drink, as the World Series shifts back to Wrigley Field this weekend.

That all makes for the perfect storm of events for bars in downtown Dubuque, and one that many who work there have been looking forward to.

"Oh I love these weekends, so many people, the unique costumes you get to see, cheer on the Cubs too tonight. Oh I live for these weekends, love these weekends," said Frank Ahlbach at 1st & Main.

He said they've been extra careful to schedule enough people at the right times to deal with the influx of people this weekend.

Across the street at Lot One, it's a similar story.

Lifelong Cubs fan and bartender Adam Gilligan can't wait for the weekend to rev up.

"It's going to be an onslaught. The Cubbies are in the World Series, and plus, you put Halloween on top of that, yeah, it's going to be busy," he said.

He's spending much of Friday afternoon stocking and stocking some more to make sure they're covered when their bar fills up.

And even though he'll be behind the bar working, he's looking forward to experiencing this World Series anyway.

"It's just kinda cool. The Cubbies are in the World Series. 29 years old, and I've never gotten a chance to be in this position," he said.

Lot One even created the Wrigley Field Starter Pack, a special they'll be selling this weekend. It features a hot dog, peanuts, cracker jacks, popcorn and Big League Chew, so you can feel like you're actually at the ball field.
