Waterloo Firefighters handed out winter coats to children in the community today.

The Waterloo Professional Firefighters Union Local 66 partnered with the organization Operation Warm for the first time this year to hand out 41 new coats to kids at the Boys and Girls Club.

Operation Warm provides new, American made coats for kids in need to help them stay warm during the winter months.

"When you're going on calls like we do, you're out in the community, you see the need out there," said Union Local 66 President Michael Spence. "There's children that  either have a hand me down coat, or sometimes no coat at all. Money's tight everywhere, and parents do what they can for their kids, so we just thought this was a perfect opportunity for us."

The Firefighters Union used the donations from their annual golf tournament to purchase coats for kids in need.

"You get a new winter coat, it brings their morale up, brings school attendance up," said Spence.

Spence hopes to be able to provide even more coats to kids next year.
