Halloween safety tips

Halloween is right around the corner, but before you get ready for the spooks and scares there are a few tips to make sure your kid is safe this Halloween.

1) Before you head out the door, make sure your trick-or-treater can be seen. Add reflective gear to their costume and give them a flashlight. Before you buy a mask, make sure your kids can see through it clearly. If not, you may want to use face paint or makeup instead."

2) Have a parent or responsible adult go along with the kids.

"Our biggest suggestion is just the adult supervision," said Cedar Falls Policed Captain Craig Berte. "That they have a plan. They're in familiar areas. And that they're being supervised by older siblings or an older adult."

3) Stay within a familiar neighborhood.

4) Only visit homes that have a porch light on.

5) Walk only on sidewalks and make sure you look both ways before you cross the street.

"Also keep in mind that at those hours in the evening there are a lot of cars that are doing the exact same thing," said Captain Berte. "They're stopping, they're backing, because they're also looking for other addresses to trick or treat. So be very careful of vehicular traffic and what vehicles are doing and stay on the sidewalks."

6) Only accept packaged candy.

7) If your kid has food allergies look for the house with the teal pumpkin, which means they will have some non-food treats.
