Waterloo gym classes teaches kids what it's like to have disabilities

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

A Waterloo teacher decides to try something new.

She wanted to show her students what it's like to have a physical disability.

Different isn't bad. That's the message Orange Elementary gym teacher Tara Raymond wanted to teach her students.

She had them take gym class with physical impairments, so they could see what it's like to have a disability.

The students rotated through different stations, and at each station they learned about a different disability.

For example, at one station the students had to play basketball while on scooters.

The kids learned what it's like to have dyslexia, to be blind, to be deaf and to have limited mobility in their arms and legs.

This is the first year Raymond brought this idea to Orange Elementary in Waterloo.

Kids in grades 3rd through 5th took part.
