Possible wide-spread debit card fraud impacts area bar

Posted: Updated:

Bushwood Sports Bar & Grill and it's customers may be victims of wide-spread debit card fraud with stolen card numbers being used as far away as Turkey and Mexico.

The popular Cedar Rapids bar has had it's IT person working with an FBI special agent to try and get to the root of the issue.

"Ran my card like I usually do and just thought it was a typical Friday night," says Shane Cozzolino.

Cozzolino is one of the several debit card fraud victims impacted after going to Bushwood Sports Bar & Grill this month.

Bushwood IT told KWWL they are a victim and made changes in their system the day they found out there was a problem.

Several customers had money taken or charges pending from the unknown hacker.

"It was about a week and two days I was without access to funds," says Casey Palmersheim after his card was cancelled because of the fraud.

Cozzolino and Palmersheim are cousins and found out they both had been victims of the fraud after going to Bushwood just days apart.

Cozzolino saw a transaction on his account from Connecticut and Palmersheim has transactions from Virginia.

Bushwood IT says they are all victims of a widespread problem impacting businesses nationwide.

"It just makes you think every time you put your card in any machine that something could be happening that is going to cause a major inconvenience in my life," says Palmersheim.

Bushwood IT says no one who has used a new card this month has had a problem, noting repeat customers were often times the ones impacted.

A city spokesperson tells us a confidential banking group reported some businesses were victim to malware that stole the card numbers.
