Garnavillo water tower earns runner up in Tank of the Year competition

Many who knew Jeff Werger wanted to pay tribute to the man after he was hit by a train and killed earlier this year.

He worked for the City of Garnavillo for a number of years and liked climbing water towers.

So naturally, those closest to him wanted to paint something on the water tower--and they decided it should be a drawing made by Jeff's 4-year-old daughter Jayda.

That mural went up earlier this summer, and just this week, Jessica, Jeff's wife, and many in Garnavillo, found out their water tower was picked as one of ten runners-up in a Tank of the Year competition, hosted by Tnemec Company.

"It means so much to have this. My daughter is going to grow up knowing that not only was he a great father and a great man, but it's something she can look at each day," Jessica said.

No one is sure who nominated their tower, but they were happy to find out about the award.

"I was really excited. Sad, bittersweet, very bittersweet, It just shows what an amazing tribute it is, that it would even be nominated and looked at like that. The whole world can see my daughter's picture. That's a good thing. That melted my heart," she said.

Chad Schroyer, Garnavillo's public works superintendent, agreed.

"It's great. It's great to see for Jeff's family. You know Jeff worked for the town for five and a half years with me. It's just a great, great thing to see it going this far," he said.

The painting is guaranteed for 15 years, meaning it will be there when Jayda graduates from high school.

"We can tell her stories, and we can show her pictures. However, she's 4, and reality is some of her memories may start to fade eventually, and this is a great tribute because she can see this everyday," Jessica said.
