VINTON (KWWL) -

An Iowa woman is sentenced to more than three years in prison for illegally giving her teenage son a rifle which was used in the accidental and deadly shooting of a 14-year-old girl.

53-year-old Robyn Merchant, of Vinton, pleading guilty to transferring a firearm to a prohibited person.  She was given 46 months in prison.  Evidence shows she gave her 16-year-old the rifle in February of 2015.  14-year-old Emma Redlinger was shot and killed at the home the next day.

Merchant's son was not allowed to have the gun after illegally using marijuana.  Officers also found drugs in his bedroom on the night of the shooting.

“From any perspective, this case is a terrible tragedy,” said U.S. Attorney Kevin W. Techau. “A 14-year-old girl is dead – and a mother is going to prison – because the mother provided her drug-using son with a gun. This case demonstrates why guns and drugs are a deadly combination.”
