East High once held 55-game winning streak

Posted: Updated:

Waterloo East was once a perennial powerhouse in Iowa High School football.

From 1965 until 1971, the Trojans won a (then) record 55 games before losing their season opener in the 1972 season.

In 2016, the Trojans barely have enough players to field a varsity team.

This week, mainly due to injuries, the Trojans don't have enough players. They have cancelled Thursday night's game with Cedar Falls,.

The game will go down as a forfeit for East. The Trojans will again finish a season without a victory.

The Trojans simply don't have the participation numbers needed to be competitive in a numbers sport like football.

It has been that way for the past several seasons.

For some great insight into that East High winning streak, check out this 2013 article from The Convoluted Mind of a Single Man, written after Iowa City Regina broke the East High record that season.
