Waterloo East forfeits last game of season

Posted: Updated:

Waterloo East High was set to play Cedar Falls on Thursday, but will no longer play the game because of injuries and low participation numbers at East High.

The East High's Varsity team is made up of just 16 players.

Despite a now 0 - 9 season, the players have left everything they have on the field each Friday.

"They have a good spirit for the game, but it can only go so long. After the first quarter you can see the signs of them getting worn out. We don't have a team where we put a whole defense in or put a whole offense in there or we put in a whole special teams. Our offense is our punt team. Our defense is our punt return team. It is what it is. Our kids enjoy the game, but we come to the reality of it," said Waterloo East's Head Football Coach Xavier Leonard.

But this isn't a new problem, East has struggled with recruitment and eligibility numbers for several years.

"People just don't want to play; something about the program. It is like a virus or something. I don't know what it is though," said Senior player Alijah Muhammad.

Although the seniors have walked off the field for the last time, they know the memories, the lessons, and the friends they made will carry on to future games on future fields.

"Freshman year. All the friends I had. All the good times we had. All the good games we had," said Muhammad.

For now, the seniors are passing on the torch a little sooner than expected.

"We will be back. We will be here. We will fill the varsity team next year. We will fill the sophomore team and a freshman team. We are recruiting right now. We got a class coming in. We've got a freshman class that we kept together; 40 guys. We will keep going; keep cycling through. In two years, we will laugh about all this; that we didn't have enough players," said Coach Leonard.
