"It's the most traumatic thing ever" -Mother of boy hit by pickup speaks out

Posted: Updated:

Tonight, we're hearing from the mother of a boy who was hit by a car. He's in critical but stable condition.

His mother says he has a fractured skull, brain swelling, broken wrist, broken leg, just to name a few. Doctors put a bolt in his brain last night to try to stop the bleeding.

The accident happened Tuesday night in the 700 block of W. 11th street in Waterloo. The boy crossed into the road to go to a friend's house. Police say it appears the boy did not look both ways before crossing into the road.

7-year-old Leighton Pullin remains in the hospital after being airlifted to Iowa City last night. His mother, Melissa Pullin and his 3-year-old sister were also outside at the time of the accident.

Melissa says, "We were walking behind him. He was just ahead of us because he was excited to go to his friend's house. My daughter actually saw it happen and I heard it...I ran over there and he was on the ground."

A scene playing over and over in Melissa's mind.

"I picked him up and he was bleeding very bad" Melissa says.

Unimaginable for any mother to go through.

"It's the most traumatic thing ever. I can't get the noise out of my head," she says.

She and other family members and friends are now just waiting..praying, but tough little Leighton is showing his mother just how strong he really is.

"He squeezes my hand when I try to talk to him. It gives me hope and it's amazing to know he can hear me," Melissa says.

She says the thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated during this very difficult time. She says a bystander also helped apply pressure to Leighton's wounds and helped calm her down.
