Dubuque will allow demolition of historic building

Posted: Updated:

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) - Dubuque officials won't try to stop the demolition of a stone building believed to be one of the oldest structures in the city.

The Telegraph Herald reports (http://bit.ly/2dxrYkU ) the City Council on Monday night voted not to extend a conservation district by one block, a move that would have made it harder for the building's owners to demolish the structure.

The two-story stone building, which dates to before the Civil War, had been largely gutted by a previous owner and would have cost $200,000 or more to renovate.

It will cost up to $36,000 to deconstruct the building.

Council Member Ric Jones says the city needs to be more proactive about identifying and preserving historic buildings.
