Joke sends University of Iowa dorm into lock-down

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

University of Iowa's Burge Residence Hall is no longer on lock-down mode, after campus police responded to a complaint of an active shooter.

It turns out, it was a joke!

At 5:08 p.m. Saturday, police received a call from a student who said he received a text message from a friend about an emergency in Burge Hall.

The message indicated there was an active shooter in the building, and directed the friend to call police.

UI Police responded shortly after where students were in the process of evacuating Burge.

At 5:16 p.m., the same student called police to say he had gotten into contact with his friend who said he was joking.

After police reviewed the area to ensure everyone's safety, students were let back into the dorm.

Both students were brought to the UI Police Department where they were questioned about the incident.

No arrests have been made.

A Hawk Alert was not issued because authorities were able to discover there was no immediate threat to students.
