Conjoined twins successfully separated; one baby out of surgery

A remarkable process took place early Friday morning in New York.

According to CNN, twin baby boys, born conjoined at the head, were successfully separated during surgery at a children's hospital in the Bronx.

Surgery for the 13-month-old twins began Thursday. CNN reports the procedure lasted more than 16 hours, with more reconstructive surgery afterwards.

One baby finished first from surgery this morning, with the other still undergoing the procedure.

CNN reports Dr. James Goodrich is considered the leading expert on this type of surgery, called craniopagus surgery.

According to CNN, the surgery with the twins this morning was the 59th craniopagus separation surgery in the world since the year 1952.
