(KWWL) -

The Johnson County Sheriff's Department posted on Facebook that Deputy Shawn Swartzendruber helped deliver a baby on the side of Highway 1.

In the post, they say the Stence Family was on their way from Webster to Iowa City. The family was forced to make an emergency stop on Highway 1.

Deputy Swartzendruber said in the post, when he arrived on scene, there was a "calm chaos."

The Facebook Post says the mom delivered the baby on the side of the road while the deputy was there. When the baby came out, the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby's neck. The baby was turning blue.

The Post then goes on to say Deputy Swartzendruber instructed her (the mom) to lower the baby toward her lap. He then slowly rotated the baby so the cord would disentangle. The baby let out a small cry and opened her eyes after the cord was freed from her neck.

Paramedics arrived several minutes later.

Below is the full post that was on the Johnson County Sheriff's Office Facebook Page:

"A six-year veteran with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, described his recent late night shift while patrolling in rural Johnson County. At 0155 hours, Deputy Swartzendruber was dispatched to assist the Stence Family who were en route from Webster to Iowa City for the birth of their child. The mother’s contractions were quickly progressing, and the family was forced to make an emergency stop on Highway 1.
When Deputy Swartzendruber, a father of four, arrived on scene he recalls that it was a “calm chaos”. The mother was sitting on the front seat enduring another contraction, the father was pacing along the shoulder talking with the 911 medical dispatcher, and their teenage daughter was out of the vehicle not quite sure how to help mom. Quickly assessing the situation, Deputy Swartzendruber assured the teenager that mom would be just fine and ushered her safely into the car and then turned his attention to the mother. The mother informed Deputy Swartzendruber that she could feel the baby’s head then the next thing he knew a baby girl had been delivered and was in the mother’s arms.
For a moment they thought all was well but quickly realized that the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby’s neck and that the baby was turning blue. The mother panicked and was trying to pull the cord away from the back of the neck which caused more strain to the front. Deputy Swartzendruber instructed her to lower the baby toward her lap and then slowly rotate the baby so the cord would disentangle. Once the baby’s neck was free of the cord, the baby let out a small cry and opened her eyes.
Paramedics arrived several minutes later to find mother and baby doing well, and all were transported to the local hospital in Iowa City. By 0219 hours, Deputy Swartzendruber was back to patrolling the roads of Johnson County."
