Police give shoplifter a gift

GREEN BAY, Wis. (KWWL) -

From shoplifting to lifting your spirits, this next story has it all.

It starts with a 19-year-old stealing crackers from a gas station in Green Bay.

Police say the young man felt guilty so he came back to the store. He said he'd pay for it and then waited for officers to show up.

Once they did, he told police he's struggling and doesn't have enough money for food.

The officer offered to pay for the crackers, but the young man said, "No."

A few days later, the officer bought a bag of groceries for him and delivered it to his apartment.

"He's a student who holds a part-time job. I just thought, 'Hopefully, I could make a difference in his life, help him get a leg up' because it was obvious to me that he was making an effort himself," said Officer Roman Trimberger.

The young man was also given a written warning for shoplifting.
