Farmers brace for freezing temperatures overnight

Posted: Updated:

Crews at Heartland Farms are doing what they can to protect their beloved pumpkin patch from the freezing temperatures tonight.

There's a lot of water in pumpkins. When the ground freezes, the pumpkins can freeze, making them soft and squishy.

Farmer David Myers says, "We got big plastic tarps to spread over the pumpkins. With the heat of the pumpkins and the heat from the earth, we will get through a cold night."

To make sure of that, crews are bringing in pumpkins from the fields.

Myers says, "That will do damage if you leave them out here."

Living in Iowa, it's something he's been through before with Mother Nature.

"Weather is an issue if you are in agriculture and she (Mother Nature) is not a pleasant partner," he says.

Before you know it, Mother Nature will change her mind again.

"If you don't like the weather, the temperature, or the wind...be patient it will change." The thought of being back in the 70s this weekend has Myers and the rest of Heartland Farms pretty excited.

"Hallelujah! We like sunny warm weekends so tell the weather man he is doing well," Myers says.

The freeze warning goes into effect from one until nine Thursday morning.
