Man whose ribs were cracked acquitted of assault on officer

Posted: Updated:

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A man whose ribs were cracked by a Des Moines officer during an arrest has been found not guilty of attacking the officer.

Sixty-one-year-old Charles Young was charged with assaulting Officer Cody Grimes after Young angrily told the officer to leave his apartment on March 20. Police say Young slammed a door on one of Grimes' legs. Young had asked for police help in evicting two people from his home.

The Des Moines Register reports (http://dmreg.co/2dWNJvs ) that a jury took only an hour Tuesday to acquit Young.

Authorities say Grimes fractured two of Young's ribs during the arrest. Des Moines Police Chief Dana Wingert later found that Grimes used appropriate force to subdue Young and take him into custody.
