The fake IRS agents calling have been busted. Police in India have arrested 70 people who were posing as IRS agents to steal money from people in the U.S.

Authorities in the western Indian city of Thane said they were investigating another 630 people suspected of being involved in the extortion scam.

The scam would involve foreigners pretending to be IRS agents and persuading individuals to buy pre-paid cash cards to settle supposed outstanding debt.

Authorities in India say there were a total of 9 call centers making $150,000 a day before they were discovered.

Stephanie Dawson has received these IRS scam calls more than once.

"I'm happy that they got at least a few them," said Dawson. "I know that there's got to be hundreds, if not thousands more."

Dawson, isn't alone. These fake IRS scammers have called millions with the same demand.

"The IRS had a warrant out for my arrest," said Dawson. "Because of you know, taxes that we hadn't paid. And so I asked him what county the warrant was out of and he said California. And I said California is a state and not a county. And they hung up."

Dawson quickly caught on, but police are still stressing the importance of never giving any personal information over the phone.

Authorities say the IRS does not call you. If the IRS needs to contact you, they will do so through the mail.

Police in India say they had a mole working inside one of the call centers before the arrests were made. However, the call center owners were able to escape.
