ISU students worried about families impacted by Hurricane Matthew

AMES (KWWL) -

Dozens of Iowa State students were bracing for the impact of Hurricane Matthew as their families evacuated the Caribbean Islands.

Political science major at ISU Peter Deveaux-Isaacs says around 50 students are members in the Pan-Caribbean student group who have ties to the areas damaged by the category 3 hurricane.

Many of the students haven't heard from their families in over 24 hours because of the region’s loss of power.

"You get a state of hopelessness when you are far away from home and you can't actually help the people you care about most," said Deveaux-Isaacs. He has family in the Bahamas.

"It's been really stressful," said Jenae Newkirk-Santana, who has family in the Dominican Republic. "I took an exam... it didn't go very well."

The Pan-Caribbean group is already planning a general assembly next Thursday to discuss relief efforts for those impacted by the hurricane.
