Marion toddler recovering from polio-like illness

Posted: Updated:

A mysterious polio-like illness is on the rise, and it's paralyzing kids across the country.

According to the CDC, as of August, there have been 50 confirmed cases across 24 states.

The illness that's on the rise in the United States causes muscle weakness.

Iowa doctors thought one Marion toddler might have it -- she was barely able to move.

The symptoms of her illness are almost identical.

In less than three days, 17-month-old  Veronica Sullivan went from smiling and exploring,  to unresponsive.

Her mom Barb Sullivan says, " Her body was pretty much in a paralysis state. She could move her eyes around, but she couldn't move her arms and legs."

Veronica's dad says,"we ended up taking her to the ER. They drew some blood, and she didn't flinch."

Doctors eventually diagnosed  Veronica with a condition called Transverse Myelitis. It's a rare polio-like illness where her immune system started attacking her spine...

Doctors are still trying to figure out why this happened to Veronica. After almost a month of recovery, she's still struggling to eat on her own. But for now, she's back on her feet, smiling once again.

Veronica's family says they are blown away by how the community has supported them. If you would like to help Veronica out, you can click here and donate.
