Winn. Co. Sheriff/Dubuque Schools reacts to clown reports

Reports of clown sightings across Eastern Iowa have prompted responses from both the Winneshiek County Sheriff and the Dubuque Community School District.

In a note sent to parents in the district, officials from the Dubuque Community School District say rumors of sightings and non-credible threats of violence have ramped up locally, including a rumor that schools will be closed Friday.

They say that rumor is not true, and additionally, no credible threats have been made to the schools.

The District, though, says they've increased their awareness of the hoax and are in regular communication with the Dubuque Police, and will provide an additional presence near schools Friday.

The Winneshiek County Sheriff also sending out a release about alleged clown sightings Thursday.

He says they've had reports of sightings in the county, and while they say they're most likely copycat-style pranks, they are nonetheless causing "a great deal of concern and fear."

According to that release, "the Sheriff’s Office is taking this situation very seriously, and these reports will not be considered “a joke.” Individuals caught participating in these acts will be charged and prosecuted."
