IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Threats from people dressed as clowns. It's one of the latest trends on social media.

In Maryland -- a school closed Monday due to threats, which police said were not credible.

In Connecticut -- a school district is banning clown costumes during this year's Halloween season.

Clowns have also allegedly been spotted in the woods, walking down roads.

Now police in eastern Iowa are receiving reports of people seeing clowns.

Overnight, University of Iowa Police posted this message on Facebook:

"We have been made aware of a clown sighting around campus the last 2 nights. We have NOT received reports of this clown harming or threatening anyone. The Department of Public Safety is taking all reports seriously, and at this time there is no threat to the University Campus or its students. If you have any information or see the clown, please contact us at 319-335-5022."
