(KWWL) -

The Waverly Area Veterans Post will have their grand-opening this Saturday. This is the first center of its kind to combine all area Veteran posts. Inside the building, lays a beautiful mural honoring veterans.

The Waverly Area Veterans Post (WAVP) is a project that has been a long time coming.

The floods of 2008 left the AMVETS Post #79 severely flooded, eventually forcing them to evacuate.

"The AMVETS had to get out of there, so they had to go somewhere," said WAVP Fundraising Chairman Marv Schumacher.

After the flood of 2008 ripped through town, many veterans were left with nowhere to turn.

Soon after, the idea came to combine all four area veterans post. The WAVP combines the American Legion Post #176, AMVETS Post #79, Marine Corps League Det. #1241, and VFW Post #2208.

After a few months of construction and generous donations, the WAVP is now standing tall and ready to serve each and every veteran under one roof.

The WAVP calls the center, "Where patriots gather." It's a place they hope will allow both young and old, active and returning vets to come together and support one another.

Most importantly, it will serve as a place to honor them. Everywhere you turn, there is a dedication to veterans.

Inside the elevator, a mural with all five branches of the armed forces. As you ride the elevator, the moving mural lights up.

The mural, serves as a tribute to these brave men and women every time they step inside. Towards the end of the ride, the words "Never Forgotten" appear, leaving these veterans with a sense of community.

"I think this will be a model not only in Iowa, but in the country," said Schumacher.

More than 800 families and organizations have donated to this post.

The grand opening will be this Saturday, October 8th from 11am to noon. After, there will be a dedication ceremony. The post will also be hosting their monthly donations Buffet Breakfast from 7:30-10 a.m.

The post is located at 1300 W. 4th St. NW Waverly, IA
